February 2013

We’ve given the cloud of God’s glory a good bit of thought recently. Sometimes the cloud rested for a day, sometimes for a month, sometimes for quite a while as Israel journeyed from a land of slavery to one of promise. When the cloud moved, the priests sprang into action, following hard after the Sovereign by obeying their step-by-step instruction for the care of the tabernacle. Each implement and each furnishing were properly stored and shielded as not to mar the foreshadowing of redemption’s work that they pictured. It’s exciting to think about the shade of His goodness by day, the warmth of His sheltering fire by night, and His clear direction being granted all the while. God’s very presence led the people and from His hand they were fed. His protection, provision, and providence have been quite evident to us as well. We have just completed pre-field training for our new jobs in Africa and have been commissioned.

This is where they lived.
We’ve figured out why the Israelites lived in tents! It rather came as a surprise to us during Survival Camp when the wind seemed to shift. In all honesty it was a bit shocking like when campfire smoke blows in your face. We laughed and then realized the joy and gravity of the moment. Gehrig and Ronda have been reassigned to Rafiki Village Nigeria. Much like those Israelites who may have been dozing by the campfire, we have suddenly and happily come to the very real conclusion that the cloud of His presence is on the move. We could not be more pleased. Time to get packing.

This is where they served.
No matter where the cloud rested for Israel, they had opportunity to serve. Gehrig will have a very full schedule serving as plant, finance, agriculture, and construction manager in Nigeria. Ronda will be involved with the Rafiki Bible Study Training, Staff Classical Training, and Rafiki Institute of Classical Education. As eager as we are about getting to Jos, we are quite happy to have opportunity to serve locally for a tiny while longer. There are many exciting things happening in our church and a great number of opportunities to share about the Rafiki Foundation all over the region. Meetings of just a few people are as grand to us as larger events. Daily we are astounded that one more person wants a brochure or would consider starting a prayer group.

This is where they worshiped.
Israel lived, ate, slept, worked, and worshiped under this cloud of glory. In many ways we have also since we first shared this calling with you in November. You have opened your homes, hearts, and houses of worship to us. Like Israel, we wait and worship. When the cloud moves, we’ll know it’s time. The packing will be done, the step-by-step “to-do” list will be checked off, and we will follow hard after the Sovereign. And when the cloud rests again in Jos, we will worship in whole new ways.

You may not know that we pray through our support team list regularly. Whatever cares press into your day, whatever concerns keep you awake at night, whatever ministry God invites you to join Him in, we pray you will come to know God better and that He will give you assurance of His protection, provision, and providence.
